Today in N’Djamena, the capital of Chad, foreign ministers from countries neighboring Sudan are gathering with a primary agenda to propose strategies for resolving the ongoing Sudanese crisis. This assembly has been mandated by the summit of leaders of countries adjacent to Sudan held last month.
The summit, which witnessed the participation of leaders from seven African nations, namely Egypt, Libya, Chad, Central Africa, South Sudan, Eritrea, and Ethiopia, approved an initiative during their meeting in Cairo on July 13th. This initiative, helmed by the foreign ministers of participating countries, will investigate the necessary measures to tackle the repercussions of the Sudanese crisis, ensuring the stability, unity, and territorial integrity of Sudan. They aim to safeguard national institutions and prevent their collapse.
The summit has tasked the initiative to formulate an executable action plan, encompassing practical solutions to halt ongoing conflicts and reach a comprehensive resolution for the Sudanese crisis. This will involve direct communication with various Sudanese parties, integrating with existing mechanisms, including the IGAD (Intergovernmental Authority on Development) and the African Union, as stated in the summit’s conclusive statement.
In a recent announcement, the Chadian Foreign Ministry highlighted that the primary purpose of the meeting is to suggest methods to extricate Sudan from its present crisis, which has pushed the nation to the brink of a devastating war, resulting in thousands of casualties and displacing millions of Sudanese. An additional focus will be to draw attention to the escalating humanitarian crisis and rally international support.
Furthermore, Ambassador Ahmed Abu Zeid, spokesperson for the Egyptian Foreign Ministry, confirmed that Egyptian Foreign Minister, Sameh Shoukry, will be attending the conference. Zeid elaborated in a statement that the foreign ministers will thoroughly examine various facets of the Sudanese crisis, encompassing its security, political, and humanitarian dimensions. They’ll analyze its implications on the Sudanese people, as well as its regional and international ramifications. The ultimate aim is to present practical suggestions, enabling the leaders of countries neighboring Sudan to take decisive actions, putting an end to the ongoing crisis and ensuring Sudan’s unity and regional safety, all while valuing the capabilities of its people.
