The trade between Morocco and Algeria experienced a sharp decline of 64% in the past year, plummeting to 2.5 billion Moroccan dirhams (approximately $246 million), according to a report on Morocco’s foreign trade published by the Exchange Office.

Trade relations between the two nations have been severely impacted by longstanding political tensions, reaching their peak in 2021 when Algeria announced a definitive cut in diplomatic relations.

Economic expert Mohammed Chiker explained in an interview with “East Economy” that these strained political ties have been the major factor in this trade decline.

Exports from Rabat to Algeria decreased by around 22% during the past year, reaching 806 million dirhams (approximately $79.3 million).

Simultaneously, imports from Algeria witnessed a steep decline of 71%, settling at 1.69 billion dirhams (nearly $166 million).
