Palestinian prisoner affairs expert, Abdul Nasser Ferwana, stated on Saturday that Israeli occupation authorities have issued approximately 2,000 administrative detention orders since the beginning of this year.

Ferwana’s comments come on the anniversary of the Geneva Conventions dated August 12, 1949, which demand the Israeli occupation government assume its responsibilities in its dealings with Palestinians in general, and specifically prisoners in its jails.

Furthermore, Ferwana noted that around 1,200 administrative detainees remain incarcerated without charge or trial in Israeli occupation jails. The Palestinian prisoners and detainees live under harsh humanitarian conditions, facing severe violations, numerous crimes, and continuous disregard for their lives and health, in contravention of basic principles of international humanitarian law.

The expert on prisoner matters highlighted that the occupation authorities have shown no respect for these laws in their interactions with Palestinians in the occupied territories or within their infamous prisons and detention centers. The occupation has intensified its violations against Palestinian detainees, increasingly resorting to administrative detention, effectively using it as a means for collective punishment.

It’s worth noting that the four Geneva Conventions dated August 12, 1949, are international treaties that nearly all countries have either joined or ratified. These conventions guarantee protection for the wounded, sick, shipwrecked members of armed forces, prisoners of war, and civilians in conflict zones, occupied territories, and beyond.
