In a recent statement, Japan’s chief government spokesperson, Hirokazu Matsuno, affirmed on Tuesday that the U.S. nuclear deterrence remains a fundamental and effective component in safeguarding Japan’s security.

The Middle East News Agency, citing the Japanese Broadcasting Corporation (NHK), reported that Matsuno’s remarks came in response to comments made by the mayor of Hiroshima, Kazumi Matsui. During the 78th commemoration of the atomic bombing of the city, Matsui described nuclear deterrence as “folly.”

Matsuno countered, emphasizing the Japanese government’s complete confidence in the United States’ commitment to uphold its obligations under the U.S.-Japan Security Treaty.

He elaborated, “The extended American deterrence, which includes nuclear deterrence, is essential within the framework of U.S.-Japan security arrangements, especially in the face of tangible security threats, such as nuclear weapon threats against our nation.”

Furthermore, the Japanese spokesperson reiterated the nation’s stance to aptly confront the current security threat while simultaneously pushing efforts towards a world free of nuclear weapons.
