Meta unveiled a free-of-charge version of its artificial intelligence (AI) model, launching the Open Innovation AI Research Community to boost transparency, innovation, and collaboration among AI researchers.
The tech giant aims to focus on the privacy, safety, and security of large language models such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
Meta expects its own researchers to participate in the organization, but the Open Innovation AI Research Community will be “member-led,” with Meta’s AI R&D group, Meta AI, serving only as a “facilitator.”
“The group will become a community of practice championing large open-source foundation models where partners can collaborate and engage with each other, share learnings, and raise questions on how to build responsible and safe foundation models,” the statement read.
“Open source drives innovation because it enables many more developers to build with new technology,” Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a Facebook post.
“It also improves safety and security because when software is open, more people can scrutinize it to identify and fix potential issues,” he added.
“Meta has a long history of investing in academia, educating the next generation of researchers and engineers, and strengthening interaction across AI disciplines that can traditionally be siloed,” Joelle Pineau, VP of AI research at Meta, told TechCrunch via email.
“The Open Innovation AI Research Community initiative is the next step in our ongoing commitment to deepen our understanding of the responsible development and sharing of large language models alongside academic researchers. We look forward to sharing more about it soon.”
