Egyptian authorities have successfully foiled an attempt to smuggle a large drug shipment weighing approximately 3.5 tons, estimated to be worth around 250 million Egyptian pounds.

The Egyptian Ministry of Interior, in a statement released today (Friday), indicated that the General Administration for Drug Control, in coordination with relevant security agencies, had obtained intelligence about a highly dangerous criminal. This individual, residing in the Fayed Police Center jurisdiction in Ismailia (east of Cairo), was planning to transport and smuggle a substantial amount of drugs from the eastern side of the Suez Canal to the west. The drugs were concealed in a furniture moving truck, intended for distribution across various provinces.

Egypt has been intensifying its efforts against drug trafficking and abuse, employing comprehensive strategies involving law enforcement and social initiatives. Recent collaborations between Egypt, the League of Arab States (LAS), and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) have resulted in the “Arab Plan for Prevention and Reduction of the Dangers of Drugs to Arab Society.” This plan aims to address drug-related issues from a social perspective, promoting a balanced approach to drug control and enhancing the response to organized crime within the Arab region.

The Egyptian government also regularly conducts operations to combat drug trafficking, focusing on prevention programs and rehabilitation efforts. For instance, the Fund for Drug Control and Treatment of Addiction (FDCTA) actively participates in educational campaigns, targeting schools and universities to raise awareness about the dangers of drug use. Additionally, Egypt has been developing its infrastructure for treating drug addiction, enhancing facilities and expanding treatment capacities across the country.

Furthermore, Egypt’s national efforts to reduce drug abuse and trafficking have been recognized internationally, demonstrating a significant decrease in drug abuse rates and increased capacity for handling addiction treatment and prevention. These measures underline Egypt’s commitment to tackling this complex issue through a combination of rigorous law enforcement and robust community engagement.
