After repeatedly criticizing Israeli violations against Palestinians, particularly in the West Bank, the European Union’s foreign policy chief, Joseph Borrell, is reportedly unwelcome in Israel. According to informed sources, Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz has denied permission for Borrell to visit Tel Aviv.

The high-ranking European official has canceled his visit to Israel as part of his current tour in the region, as reported by Yedioth Ahronoth on Thursday. The European Union has not issued any comments or clarifications on the matter.

Borrell had sharply criticized Israeli violations in the West Bank a few days ago, stating that they obstruct the two-state solution and make it unfeasible. He has repeatedly directed his criticisms at Israel’s National Security Minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, indicating that the EU is considering sanctions against them for their role in encouraging settler attacks on Palestinian civilians in the West Bank.

Since October 7th last year, the West Bank has experienced the worst disturbances in decades, resulting in the deaths of more than 690 Palestinians, including 133 children, by Israeli security forces or settlers. There have also been repeated attacks by settlers on Palestinian homes and farmland.

Statements from some Israeli ministers, particularly Ben-Gvir and Smotrich, have exacerbated these attacks, especially as many settlers felt officially protected.
