Three members of the Syrian security forces were killed in an armed attack on their vehicle near the city of Daraa in southern Syria on Thursday.
The attack occurred as unidentified gunmen opened fire on a security vehicle traveling between the town of Al-Naima and the Saida Bridge.
The officers were en route to their duty station at the Nasib border crossing, according to a statement by the police chief of Daraa province.
Sources in Daraa told the German Press Agency (DPA) that the gunmen targeted the military vehicle near the Saida Bridge on the Damascus-Amman international highway, with the sound of gunfire heard in the nearby town of Al-Naima, east of Daraa city.
This incident comes just one day after the province experienced heightened tensions following an explosion that targeted the convoy of the provincial governor.
That attack, which involved an improvised explosive device (IED), resulted in six minor injuries.
The Damascus-Amman highway has been the site of frequent attacks on Syrian government forces in recent years, with numerous buses carrying soldiers targeted, leading to multiple fatalities and injuries.
The ongoing violence in Daraa highlights the continuing instability in the region, which has been a flashpoint for unrest since the early days of the Syrian conflict.
