Lebanon’s Minister of Economy, Amin Salam, expressed concerns on Tuesday that the country’s food and medical supplies would only last for four months in the event of an expanded war.

In a statement to Al Arabiya Al Hadath news channel, Salam strongly opposed any escalation by Hezbollah, emphasizing Lebanon’s firm stance against any such actions from day one.

The minister highlighted Lebanon’s unstable conditions, pointing out that electricity has reached a critical low, a crisis he attributed to decades of corruption and mismanagement.

According to Salam, the current Lebanese government is deeply divided, with a lack of clear leadership within state institutions contributing to the dysfunction. He noted that some ministers are even boycotting cabinet meetings, further complicating governance.

In related developments, Lebanon’s Acting Foreign Minister, Dr. Abdullah Bou Habib, urged the European Union to exert pressure on Israel to cease its ongoing aggression against Lebanon and comply with UN Resolution 1701.

This appeal came during a phone conversation with the EU‘s Foreign Policy Commissioner, Josep Borrell, highlighting the international dimension of Lebanon’s security concerns.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed deep concern over the escalating exchange of fire along the Blue Line in Lebanon.

In statements reported by the American channel “Al-Hurra” on Sunday evening, the UN Secretary-General warned that these actions put both Lebanese and Israeli civilians at risk and threaten regional security and stability.

Guterres called on all parties to immediately de-escalate the situation and urgently return to a cessation of hostilities, fully implementing Resolution 1701.

Since October 2023, tensions between Hezbollah and Israel have been steadily escalating. The conflict has seen a series of exchanges, including rocket and drone attacks from Hezbollah, targeting Israeli military positions and civilian areas. Israel has responded with heavy airstrikes, hitting Hezbollah targets deep within Lebanon.
