United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed disappointment on Tuesday over the inability of the Security Council to agree on the extension of the UN’s cross-border aid operations in Syria. This was stated by UN spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric.

The current authorization for delivering aid across borders into Syria expired on Monday, July 10. The Security Council, on Tuesday, failed to adopt either of the two resolution drafts that could have renewed the mechanism.

In a statement, Dujarric said that the UN’s cross-border aid remains a genuine lifeline for millions of people in northwest Syria, where humanitarian needs have reached their highest levels ever since the conflict began. The devastating impact of the earthquakes that occurred in February is still keenly felt.

Guterres is calling on all members of the Security Council to redouble their efforts to support the continuation of delivering cross-border aid to Syria, Dujarric said.
