Lebanon’s representative to the United Nations Security Council has claimed that “Israel is trying to drag the region into a regional war with catastrophic consequences.” This statement followed the assassination of Hezbollah leader Fouad Shukr and Hamas commander Ismail Haniyeh.

During an emergency session of the Council, the representative emphasized that “the Israeli attack on the Beirut suburb targeted a residential area,” noting that “this assault represents a dangerous escalation.”

He added: “It is ironic that the killer of thousands of children in Gaza is lamenting the children of Majdal Shams.”

On Tuesday, the Israeli military announced it had carried out a “precise” strike in the Lebanese capital, Beirut, which resulted in the death of a Hezbollah commander responsible for “the killing of children in Majdal Shams and many Israeli citizens.”

The attack, which targeted a building in the southern suburb of Beirut, resulted in four deaths and approximately 80 injuries.

On Wednesday evening, Hezbollah mourned Shukr, stating in a statement: “After a life full of faith in God and a covenant with God, we mourn the great jihadist leader and dear brother, Mr. Fouad Shukr (Mr. Mohsen), who has become a great martyr on the path to Jerusalem.”

Recent tensions between Israel and Lebanon have been marked by increased military actions and severe rhetoric from both sides. Hezbollah, a major political and militant group based in Lebanon, has frequently clashed with Israeli forces. The group’s involvement in regional conflicts and its role in the Syrian civil war have further strained relations. Israel has carried out several airstrikes in Lebanon, targeting Hezbollah positions and infrastructure. These actions are often in response to cross-border attacks or perceived threats from Hezbollah.

Lebanon’s internal political struggles and economic crises have compounded tensions. The government’s inability to address these issues effectively has led to increased criticism of foreign interventions and conflicts.
