The UN Security Council is set to discuss the ongoing political process in Syria and the humanitarian situation there during its monthly briefing today, Monday.
The session will also address the recent Houthi group’s attack on Tel Aviv.
According to a statement from the Security Council, Syria’s Special Envoy Geir Pedersen, along with Ramesh Rajasingham, the head of the Coordination Division at the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Geneva, will provide updates in an open session followed by closed consultations.
The Council confirmed that its monthly briefing and consultations on Yemen would take place tomorrow, Tuesday.
Hans Grundberg, the UN’s Special Envoy for Yemen, and Joyce Msuya, the Acting Deputy Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, are scheduled to brief the Council.
Michael Perry, head of the UN Mission to Support the Hodeidah Agreement, is expected to provide a briefing on the consultations.
This week, the Security Council will also discuss a ceasefire between Hezbollah and Israel, anti-corruption efforts in Central Asia, and support for stability in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
A Security Council statement noted that a session on the work of the UN Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia is scheduled for Tuesday.
The special representative and head of the UN’s Regional Anti-Corruption Centre for Central Asia, Kahe Imnadze, will brief on these matters.
Moreover, a briefing session on the ceasefire between Hezbollah and Israel is scheduled for the day after tomorrow, with Janine Hennis-Plasschaert, the Special Coordinator for Lebanon, and Jean-Pierre Lacroix, the Deputy Secretary-General for Peace Operations, presenting the briefing.
On Thursday, the Council will hold an open briefing session under the agenda item “Threats to international peace and security,” where Russia has requested a discussion on Western arms supplies to Ukraine. Adejuyigbe Ibo, Deputy High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, is expected to brief.
Members of the Security Council are negotiating a draft resolution this week, formulated by France and Sierra Leone, concerning the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
This resolution is related to the support provided by the UN Mission for the Stabilization of the Congo in cooperation with the Southern African Development Community’s mission in Eastern Congo since December 2023.
