Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein and UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir O. Pedersen underscored the necessity of joint efforts to find a comprehensive and sustainable solution to the Syrian crisis.

This discussion took place during a phone call on Tuesday, according to the Iraqi News Agency (INA).

In a post on the social media platform X, Minister Hussein stated, “I received a phone call from the UN Special Envoy for Syria, Geir O. Pedersen.”

Hussein added, “We discussed the current situation in Syria and exchanged views on Iraq’s pivotal role in the region. We emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts towards achieving a comprehensive and sustainable resolution to the Syrian crisis.”

Oleg Ignatiev, Deputy Head of the Russian Center for Reconciliation of Opposing Sides in Syria, reported that aircraft and drones from the U.S.-led international coalition carried out 13 unauthorized incursions into Syrian airspace over the Al-Tanf area within the past 24 hours.

In statements reported by the Russian news agency TASS, Ignatiev stated, “In the Al-Tanf area, 13 violations of the airspace of the Syrian Arab Republic were recorded by the coalition using F-15 fighter jets, a pair of Rafale fighter jets, a pair of Typhoon fighter jets, two pairs of Thunderbolt attack aircraft, and a multipurpose MQ-1C unmanned aerial vehicle within the past 24 hours.”

The Russian military official added, “Additionally, seven violations of the deconfliction protocols, agreed upon on December 9, 2019, regarding uncoordinated drone flights with the Russian side, were recorded over the past day.”
