On Wednesday, Israeli tanks and artillery struck Syrian army targets in the Golan Heights, citing violations of the 1974 demilitarization agreement, according to the Israeli military.

“The IDF (Israel Defense Forces) holds the Syrian military responsible for all activities occurring within its territory and will not allow any attempts to violate Israeli sovereignty,” the military stated.

This strike follows an incident on Tuesday when an Israeli couple was killed by a Hezbollah rocket fired at the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. Hezbollah claimed the attack was retaliation for Israel’s killing of one of its members in Syrian territory. Hezbollah’s attacks on Israel began after its ally Hamas launched an offensive on October 7, triggering the war in Gaza.

The ongoing conflict has forced tens of thousands of Israelis and Lebanese to evacuate from areas around the border between the two countries.
