The Iraqi Ministry of Interior has called on Syrians residing in Iraq with expired or invalid residency permits to regularize their status within a specified timeframe.
Yassin El-Hajjami, the acting Iraqi ambassador to Syria, stated in comments published by the newspaper “Al-Watan” that Syrians who violate residency conditions in Iraq must regularize their status between July 1 and September 7.
He emphasized the importance of Syrian residents in Iraq contacting the Directorate of Residency Affairs to correct their legal status.
This move comes amid ongoing challenges faced by Syrian refugees and residents in Iraq. Iraq hosts a significant number of Syrian refugees who fled the conflict that began in 2011.
Many of these refugees live in camps or urban areas and have faced difficulties in maintaining valid residency permits due to bureaucratic hurdles and financial constraints.
On June 27, Human Rights Watch reported that Iraq had deported some Syrians despite their possession of official Iraqi documents, allowing them to stay and work in the country or register as asylum seekers with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
The situation highlights the precarious position of Syrian refugees in Iraq, who often navigate a complex and restrictive legal environment.
International organizations have urged Iraq to provide clearer pathways for refugees to maintain their legal status and avoid arbitrary deportations, which can exacerbate their already vulnerable condition.
