Jordanian officials announced on Wednesday the foiling of two plots to smuggle millions of Captagon pills, a narcotic substance, through a border crossing near Saudi Arabia, in the largest seizure of drugs trafficked by networks linked to Iran operating in southern Syria in years.

The Jordanian Public Security Directorate stated in a press release on Wednesday the interception of two smuggling operations involving around 9.5 million narcotic pills and 143 kilograms of marijuana, with the arrest of the gang members involved.

According to the Jordanian news agency “Petra,” the Anti-Narcotics Department dismantled the operations of the two gangs following two months of continuous intelligence and operational efforts to monitor and uncover their criminal activities within the kingdom, as well as their connections to regional drug trafficking networks and their affiliated branches.

The statement explained that the Anti-Narcotics Department had been monitoring initial information for about two months regarding two groups associated with regional drug manufacturing and trafficking networks preparing to smuggle large quantities of narcotics.

Simultaneously with the interception of the vehicle and its driver, necessary plans were put in place to apprehend two individuals involved in the smuggling operation, who were planning to evade detection at the moment of the smuggling attempt.

The Public Security Directorate stated in its press release that investigations into the two cases are ongoing to uncover all the details, identify all external links, take all necessary legal actions, and engage with countries where individuals implicated in the two cases are found to be present.
