The U.S. Embassy in Damascus has affirmed that the present conditions in Syria are unsuitable for the large-scale organized return of refugees, emphasizing that the return of Syrians must be voluntary, safe, dignified, and sustainable.
In a post on the platform “X,” the embassy clarified that the Syrian regime holds the key to creating the necessary conditions for the return of refugees.
This includes ending forced conscription, guaranteeing property rights, halting human rights violations, and making genuine progress in line with UN Resolution 2254.
The embassy pointed out that Damascus and other parties claim that the conditions for a safe and voluntary return of refugees to Syria are already met.
However, the embassy stated, “The United Nations and other humanitarian organizations maintain that the current conditions in Syria are not suitable for the return of refugees.”
