UK Prime Minister pledged an additional €580 million in new military supplies for Ukraine, including long-range missiles and four million rounds of ammo.
Rishi Sunak has committed to providing Ukraine with the UK’s most substantial military aid package yet, cautioning that Vladimir Putin’s ambitions could extend beyond Ukraine, potentially threatening Poland.
Sunak plans to travel to Poland and Germany to engage in discussions on European security and the Russian threat with Polish leader Donald Tusk, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg, and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
The UK’s aid to Kyiv will include 400 vehicles, over 1,600 missiles, 4 million rounds of ammunition, 60 boats, and an additional £500 million in military funding, elevating the total support this financial year to £3 billion.
Sunak emphasized the importance of supporting Ukraine in its fight against Russia, stating that the security of Europe is at stake if Putin’s invasion is successful.
Sunak remarked, “Ukraine’s armed forces continue to exhibit remarkable courage, but they require immediate support. This package is crucial for enabling them to confront Russian forces effectively.”
The UK has pledged nearly £12 billion in total support to Ukraine since February 2022, with £7.1 billion designated for military aid and the remainder for humanitarian and economic assistance.
The announcement coincides with the US House of Representatives approving a $61 billion military aid package for Ukraine after internal debates within the Republican Party.
The additional £500 million from the UK will be funded by the Treasury and allocated for ammunition, air defences, UK-manufactured drones, and engineering support for Ukrainian forces.
The Ministry of Defence is set to dispatch a significant shipment of military equipment to Ukraine, described as the largest of its kind from the UK, aimed at bolstering Ukraine’s defence capabilities on various fronts.
This includes 60 boats, over 1,600 missiles, 400 vehicles, and nearly 4 million rounds of ammunition.
