Libya’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Taher Al-Sunni, discussed with the Assistant Secretary-General and Special Adviser on Internal Displacement, Robert Piper, how to enhance the United Nations’ support for refugees in Libya.

The Libyan mission to the organization stated that the meeting addressed the task assigned to the advisor to reform the way the United Nations addresses the issue of internal displacement and the progress Libya is making on this file.

The international official emphasized the need to restructure the support provided by the United Nations in this regard, and to consider this issue more comprehensively and link it to peacebuilding discussions.

Piper added that the number of internally displaced persons has recently increased significantly globally, and that the tools currently used are insufficient to deal with this problem.

He also praised “the national efforts being made to address the issue of displacement, which he witnessed during his visit to Libya late last year,” noting the role of national reconciliation in resolving displacement crises.
