In a recent development within the European Union’s maritime mission in the Red Sea, a Greek military vessel took decisive action against aerial threats.

According to a spokesperson from the Hellenic National Defense General Staff, the Greek warship engaged and repelled two unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) on Wednesday.

The operation is part of “Operation ASPIS,” initiated in February to secure a vital maritime trade route.

This strategic passage has been under the threat of drone and missile attacks attributed to the Houthi rebels.

The insurgent group claims these aggressive maneuvers are retaliatory actions in response to the Israeli military campaign in Gaza.

Greece’s contribution to this mission involves deploying a frigate, showcasing the nation’s commitment to maintaining security and stability in this essential maritime corridor.

The incident underscores the ongoing challenges and complexities in safeguarding international trade routes against emerging asymmetric threats.
