Norwegian police said Thursday that one person was killed and five others injured when a helicopter crashed into the ocean off western Norway.

Officials stated that the Sikorsky S-92 helicopter operated by Norwegian company Bristow was on a search and rescue training mission yesterday when the accident occurred.

In a statement on Thursday, the police reported that rescue personnel retrieved the six individuals who were aboard the helicopter from the sea. However, it was later announced that one of them had died in the hospital. The police added that one survivor sustained minor injuries, while the injuries of the other four vary in severity.

The cause of the accident was not immediately known. Sikorsky, the manufacturer of the helicopter, stated yesterday that safety is its top priority and that it is ready to support the investigation. Sikorsky is a subsidiary of Lockheed Martin.

Equinor, an energy company, clarified that the helicopter specialized in search and rescue operations and typically provided services to the company’s Oseberg oil and gas platforms in the North Sea.
