Iraqi judicial officials have confirmed that the family of the deceased ISIS leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, has been repatriated to Iraq for interrogation.

The Supreme Judicial Council announced the repatriation efforts without specifying the number of family members or their origin. However, a judicial source revealed that Baghdadi’s wife, who was detained in Turkey, has been returned along with her children.

The repatriation is part of Iraq’s ongoing efforts to bring back individuals accused of terrorism who have been on the run outside the country. Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was killed by U.S. forces in a raid in northwestern Syria in October 2019, marking a significant blow to the leadership of ISIS, which had declared an Islamic “caliphate” in the region.

Iraqi courts have been actively prosecuting individuals associated with terrorism, handing down numerous death sentences and life imprisonment terms under the penal code for membership in terrorist groups. This latest move underscores Iraq’s commitment to addressing the legacy of terrorism and holding individuals accountable for their involvement with extremist organizations.
