Pakistan’s military has successfully neutralized 24 militants over the course of three days in the troubled southwestern province of Balochistan, as disclosed in a statement released on Friday, just days before the upcoming national elections.
The military statement reported that, in addition to the militant casualties, four law enforcement personnel and two civilians lost their lives during the operations in Balochistan.
The heightened military activity in the region is a response to recent attacks on the Mach and Kolpur complexes in Balochistan by militants, including suicide bombers, as confirmed by the military’s Inter Services Public Relations agency (ISPR) on Tuesday. The Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), one of several separatist groups operating in Balochistan, claimed responsibility for the attacks.
Balochistan, Pakistan’s largest province in terms of territory but the smallest in population, has been grappling with a prolonged insurgency, with the BLA at the forefront of the separatist movements. The group seeks independence for Balochistan, a region known for its mountainous terrain and rich mineral resources.
The surge in militant violence in Pakistan’s border areas has heightened security concerns in the lead-up to the national elections scheduled for next Thursday. Authorities are on high alert to ensure the safety and security of the electoral process amid the ongoing challenges posed by insurgent groups in the region.
