The United Nations has raised alarms about the potential for the humanitarian crisis in Gaza to deteriorate further. The UN’s top humanitarian official reported to Member States that fierce hostilities continue across Gaza, resulting in the destruction or severe damage of 41,000 houses. More than 1.5 million Gazans have been displaced, and 18 hospitals have shut down, leaving hundreds of thousands living in fear under continuous bombardment. The casualty figures are reported to exceed 11,000, with a significant portion being children and women. The crisis has led to severe shortages of food and water, and essential services like water desalination are failing due to a lack of fuel.
Furthermore, the health sector in Gaza is under extreme pressure. Hospitals face catastrophic shortages of medical supplies due to a total blockade, leading to rapidly depleting emergency, trauma, and surgical supplies. The ongoing power outage exacerbates the situation, putting thousands of patients at immediate risk, including those requiring critical care such as kidney and cancer patients. The World Health Organization has documented numerous attacks on healthcare facilities, resulting in direct damage to hospitals and the loss of health workers’ lives.
