The Iraqi Federal Intelligence and Investigation Agency, under the Ministry of Interior, announced today, Monday, the arrest of nine terrorists across four provinces. According to the agency’s statement reported by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), specialized intelligence squads in Ninewa province carried out a quality operation based on intelligence information, resulting in the arrest of three suspects, including a woman, under Article 4 of the Anti-Terrorism Law. The suspects confessed to planning sabotage activities within the province, and light weapons were seized from their possession.
The agency’s squads also conducted separate operations in the provinces of Al Muthanna, Maysan, Kirkuk, and Ninewa, capturing six suspects under the Anti-Terrorism Law. Additionally, in Baghdad, the agency’s squads (Federal Police Intelligence Directorate) conducted another operation, arresting a suspect under Article 32 of the Anti-Drugs Law.
In a related context, the Iraqi Security Media Cell announced the launch of the fourth phase of the “Promise of Truth” operations in the Hadar Island, southwest of Mosul city in Ninewa province. The fourth phase of “Promise of Truth” operations continued under the supervision and field planning of the Iraqi Joint Operations Command, based on accurate information from intelligence agencies and departments. The Counter-Terrorism Service units, supported by the Iraqi Air Force and Army Aviation, launched quality operations against targets, dens, and hideouts of ISIS terrorist elements in Hadar Island.
Recent raids in Iraq against terrorists have been part of ongoing efforts to combat terrorist activities in the region. The UN has been actively involved in documenting ISIL’s atrocities in Iraq, with a focus on sexual violence and the development and use of chemical weapons against minorities. The UN Investigative Team to Promote Accountability for Crimes Committed by Da’esh (UNITAD) has been laying the groundwork for future prosecutions of these heinous crimes.
In addition to the efforts within Iraq, regional dynamics have also seen Turkish military actions targeting Kurdish fighters in northern Iraq and Syria as part of their efforts to secure their borders and prevent attacks. These air raids have been a response to escalating violence and are part of Turkey’s ongoing operations against the PKK, which is considered a terrorist organization by Turkey, the US, and the EU.
