Three American soldiers were killed, and 25 others were injured in an attack on a base in northeastern Jordan near the Syrian border, according to the US Department of Defense (Pentagon) on Sunday.
The department stated that the attack occurred on Saturday night with a drone laden with explosives targeting the base.
A US military official later told Reuters that the number of casualties is “rising” without specifying the exact count.
He confirmed that 34 American soldiers are being examined for possible brain injuries following the attack.
CNN reported that the drone that targeted the military site appears to have been launched from Syria.
A Pentagon official told Sky News Arabia that Washington holds Iranian militias responsible for the attack on US forces in Jordan, stating that the Pentagon considers what the US forces in Jordan were subjected to as a serious escalation.
The US Department of Defense stated that President Joe Biden has been briefed on the situation involving the American soldiers.
There are 2,900 US soldiers in military bases in Jordan, according to the Pentagon.
The bases housing American forces in the region have been subjected to dozens of attacks in recent months, coinciding with Israel’s intense attacks on the Gaza Strip
