The permanent representatives of the Arab League member states convened an emergency meeting in Cairo today, Monday, to discuss the ongoing Israeli war on the Gaza Strip since October 7, 2023. In the meeting, Assistant Secretary-General of the Arab League, Said Abu Ali, emphasized the current priority to halt the aggression on Gaza, highlighting the various crises faced by its residents, according to Cairo News Channel.

Abu Ali stressed the need for a political solution addressing the root causes of the conflict, including ending the occupation and realizing an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital. He also pointed out the intensification of Israeli settlement crimes and actions undermining the Palestinian Authority.

As reported by the Egyptian newspaper “Al-Masry Al-Youm”, Abu Ali expressed during the meeting, “The shadow of death from hunger and cold looms over Gaza’s destroyed neighborhoods, while the declared Israeli war extends to the Palestinian people in the West Bank and in its heart, the besieged city of Jerusalem since the war began.”

The Council is deliberating, in this session requested by Palestine, on the developments of the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip and ways to stop it. The Arab League Secretary-General, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, is absent from the meeting due to his participation in an upcoming meeting between the foreign ministers of the European Union, Israel, Palestine, Egypt, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia in Brussels.

The Brussels meeting focuses on preparations for an international peace conference to establish the “two-state solution in the Middle East” in the coming months. It will also discuss the European Union’s preparations to impose sanctions on illegitimate Jewish settlers resorting to violence against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem.

Since October 7, 2023, Israel has waged a devastating war on the Gaza Strip, which has so far claimed the lives of over 25,000 Palestinian civilians and injured more than 62,000, mostly women and children. The conflict has resulted in the complete or partial destruction of over 60% of the buildings in the Gaza Strip.
