Germany has announced that Berlin will provide military aid to Ukraine worth over €7 billion in the current year.

The German government stated in a press release that Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz discussed “ongoing support for Ukraine and the situation in the Middle East” in a phone call with US President Joe Biden on Tuesday.

They agreed on the “necessity of continuing financial, military, and humanitarian support for Ukraine.”

The statement further noted that “in 2024, Germany will support Ukraine with military goods worth more than seven billion euros.”

The White House also mentioned in a statement about the conversation between Biden and Scholz that the two leaders “coordinate the ongoing, steady support provided by their countries to Ukraine.”

Initially, Berlin had planned to allocate a lower amount (around €4 billion) to Ukraine in 2024 before it was increased based on a request from the German Defense Minister, Boris Pistorius.

Earlier, German Finance Minister Christian Lindner revealed that Berlin contributes 50% of the European Union’s aid earmarked for Kyiv, calling on Europe to share the support in the face of energy price increases following sanctions against Russia and inflation.

Moscow has emphasized that Western nations interested in negotiating a settlement to the conflict in Ukraine should stop arming Kyiv first.
