In a commitment to humanitarian support, Germany has announced a generous donation of €200 million to aid Sudan and its neighboring areas until 2024. The declaration was made by Katja Keul, Germany’s Minister of State at the Federal Foreign Office.

Keul expressed Germany’s pledge during a video conference at the High-Level Pledging Event for Sudan and the Region, held under the auspices of the United Nations in Geneva.

The move underscores Germany’s sustained commitment to bolstering humanitarian efforts in the region, promising significant aid over the next couple of years.

Germany, as part of its ongoing commitment to international humanitarian assistance, has pledged significant support for Sudan and the surrounding region in recent years. The country has consistently emphasized the importance of aiding conflict-affected regions and countries undergoing transitional periods.

Sudan, in particular, has been facing considerable political and economic challenges in its transition to a civilian-led government following the ousting of President Omar al-Bashir in 2019. Alongside these internal struggles, it is also contending with the impacts of regional conflict, economic instability, climate change, and most recently, the COVID-19 pandemic.

As such, humanitarian aid is critical for Sudan, with millions of its citizens requiring assistance. Germany’s pledge is set to help alleviate some of the strains facing Sudan and its surrounding region, aiding with urgent needs such as food security, healthcare, education, and infrastructure.
