Natural gas production in Algeria is projected to grow at an annual rate of 1.4%, reaching 146.7 billion cubic meters by the year 2028.
The Director General for Forecasting at the Ministry of Energy and Mines, Miloud Medjelled, indicated that this increase is due to the activation of new gas fields during 2024-2028, with an additional output of 16.3 billion cubic meters.
This growth will also be supported by the increased production at the Hassi R’mel field and the development of the Touat deposit, both contributing to maintaining production of over 130 billion cubic meters annually during the same period.
In the context of the sector’s efforts to ensure the security of these supplies and to increase production, especially in gas, the official emphasized that the sector has taken several other measures.
These include strengthening the national mining sector (attracting foreign direct investment, simplifying procedures, and improving the business climate), intensifying efforts in production and export, completing projects under development, increasing the recovery rate of oil and gas, and diversifying the energy mix.
In 2023, France significantly boosted its purchases of fuel from Algeria, as imports of Algerian gas surged by a staggering 92% to reach $1.6 billion.
French imports of Algerian gas increased by 92.1% during the first half of 2023, according to data from French customs reported by “La Lettre économique d’Algérie,” a magazine affiliated with the French Ministry of Economy and Finance.
The value of these purchases amounts to $1.6 billion and represents half of France’s total gas imports from around the world.
France also imported oil valued at $1.03 billion and oil derivatives worth $501.7 million. In total, hydrocarbon imports increased by 35.1% compared to the same period in 2022.
Trade between the two countries increased by 17.6% during the first half of 2023, totaling €5.8 billion.
