Iran Backs Iraq's Call to End International Coalition Presence

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanaani expressed support for Iraq’s desire to see the withdrawal of the international coalition from its territory.

He stated that the Iraqi armed forces possess the necessary authority and capability to ensure security, signaling that it’s time for the United States to depart from Iraq.

The international coalition, led by the United States and involving other nations like France and Spain, was established a decade ago to combat the Islamic State’s presence in Iraq and Syria.

In recent weeks, US and coalition forces stationed in Iraq and Syria have faced near-daily attacks, mostly attributed to the “Islamic Resistance in Iraq,” a group comprising factions aligned with Iran and part of the Popular Mobilization Forces, which is integrated into the official Iraqi armed forces.

These factions have criticized US support for Israel during the conflict with Hamas.

Following US airstrikes in Baghdad that resulted in the death of a prominent figure within the Popular Mobilization Forces, the Iraqi government reaffirmed its stance on ending the international coalition’s presence on its soil.

Kanaani emphasized, “It’s only natural for the Iraqi government and its people to shoulder their national responsibility in confronting the unlawful actions of US forces in Iraq.”

Currently, the United States has around 2,500 troops deployed in Iraq and around 900 in Syria as part of the international coalition.
