Sotheby’s is set to auction a remarkable set of Air Jordans, linked to Michael Jordan’s six NBA championship victories, next month.
The collection, known as ‘The Dynasty Collection,’ could reach a value of up to $10 million. It includes Air Jordan models from 1991 to 1998 – specifically, the VI, VII, VIII, XI, XII, and XIV editions.
Regarded by Sotheby’s as the most significant and valuable set of Air Jordan sneakers to ever hit the market, Brahm Wachter, the Head of Modern Collectables at Sotheby’s, has equated this collection to the ‘Mona Lisa’ within sneaker and sports memorabilia circles.
The backstory of this collection is intriguing. Following each championship game won by the Bulls in the 1990s, Michael Jordan presented one of his sneakers to Tim Hallam, the team’s Director of Public and Media Relations.
In the 1991 NBA Finals, Jordan’s Bulls, facing the LA Lakers led by Magic Johnson, overcame an initial loss to win the series in five games, marking the Bulls’ first appearance in the championship series.
The following year, the Bulls, defending their title, competed against Clyde Drexler’s Portland Trail Blazers.
Despite a tough start, where the series was tied after four games, the Bulls secured the championship in six games.
This victory came shortly after a Sports Illustrated cover in May 1992 declared Drexler as Jordan’s principal rival.
