Jordan’s Parliamentary Education Committee stated that it had discussed the decision issued by Kuwait’s Ministry of Higher Education to halt the medical scholarships in Jordan.

Talib Al-Sarayrah, Haed of the Parliamentary Education and Youth Committee, highlighted the importance of quality and competence of education in Jordan, specifically in the field of medical specialties.

Al-Sarayrah also asserted that Jordanian universities have a regional and global presence that is widely acknowledged.

He underlined that the committee plans to hold meetings with several university presidents and deans of medical faculties in order to understand the context of Kuwait’s decision to suspend medical scholarships to Jordan.

The Secretary of the Parliamentary Education and Youth Committee, Mohammad Al-Muharameh, clarified that Kuwait has not withdrawn recognition of four medical specialties at Jordanian universities.

Al-Muharameh pointed out that the Parliamentary Education and Youth Committee would contact the Presidency of the House of Representatives in order to find “solutions” to this issue.

On his part, Jordan’s Minister of Education, Higher Education, and Scientific Research, Azmi Mahafaza, affirmed that this is not the first decision of its kind from Kuwait.

Mahafaza elaborated that the decision by the Kuwaiti Ministry of Higher Education only includes a halt in dispatching students, not a denial of recognition of Jordanian qualifications.
