Josep Borrell, High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, denounced the attacks in Gaza, highlighting “an appalling lack of distinction” in Israel’s military operation in Gaza.
“Far too many civilians have been killed in Gaza, as pointed out among others also by the French, German, and UK Foreign Ministers,” Borrell wrote on the X platform. “Certainly, we are witnessing an appalling lack of distinction in Israel’s military operation in Gaza.”
The EU official added that shelters for displaced people were attacked due to Israeli airstrikes and called for a humanitarian pause.
Borrell said: “The aggravating humanitarian situation in Gaza, the increasing violence from settlers in the West Bank and the disruption of shipping lanes in the Red Sea are posing growing risks in the area and may further spiral.”
In previous remarks, the EU official affirmed full solidarity with the Palestinian people amid the Israeli war in Gaza.
“What is happening in Gaza is the consequence of a political and moral failure of the international community, which has not done everything it should have done, 30 years after the Oslo agreements, 30 years! to make the two-state solution a reality.”
Borrell underlined that the occupied territories are four times bigger than 30 years ago and the Palestinian territory has been divided into an archipelago of unconnected areas, which certainly makes it much more difficult to implement the two-state solution.
