On Tuesday, Saudi Arabia declared its intention to co-host an international conference focused on the humanitarian response to the ongoing conflict in Sudan. The official statement, released by the Saudi Press Agency on Tuesday, cited the country’s foreign ministry and announced the conference would take place on June 19.

The Saudi-led initiative, co-chaired by Qatar, Egypt, Germany, and the European Union, in collaboration with United Nations agencies, aims to address the humanitarian crisis sparked by the eight-week-long Sudanese conflict. Saudi Arabia and the United States have been active mediators in the dispute between Sudanese army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and his ex-deputy, Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, commonly known as Hemedti. Hemedti leads the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces and has been a key player in the conflict.

Furthermore, Saudi Arabia has played a significant part in the crisis, spearheading the evacuation of thousands of foreign nationals from Sudan in the early stages of the conflict. According to the UN, the war has left a record 25 million people, over half of Sudan’s population, in desperate need of aid and protection.
