The Interior Ministry of the Tripoli-based Government revealed on Friday that it successfully rescued 147 migrants from various Arab and African countries off the coast of Zuwara in western Libya.

In an announcement posted on its official Facebook page, the Ministry stated that the “illegal migrants” were brought to Tripoli Seaport. Upon arrival, they were received by the Anti-Illegal Immigration Agency, which is set to take legal measures against them.

Libya has consistently been a focal point for migrants attempting to cross the Mediterranean in hopes of reaching Europe. In 2016, the country initiated its first national strategy to combat migrant smuggling and ensure the protection of vulnerable migrants, particularly in Egypt.

As part of this strategy, Libya has also strengthened penalties for those involved in the crime of migrant smuggling, aiming to deter such activities. The recent rescue and return of migrants underscore the ongoing challenges and efforts faced by Libya in addressing the complex issue of irregular migration.
