The director of the UN Office for the High Commissioner for Human Rights resigned, as  the UN is “failing” in its duty to prevent genocide of Palestinian civilians in Gaza

The official highlighted the urgency of the matter, pointing out the ongoing settler colonial venture backed by ethno-nationalist sentiments in Europe, which has now pushed Palestine to a perilous crossroads. This has placed the remaining aspects of indigenous Palestinian life at risk.

Craig Mokhiber underscored the active role of Palestinians, their allies, various human rights defenders, Christian and Muslim groups, as well as forward-thinking Jewish individuals, all standing united against the ongoing crisis. He stressed that it is crucial for others to join this movement and follow their lead.

Mokhiber did not mince words when he drew attention to the unfolding genocide in Palestine, expressing disappointment at the apparent helplessness of the international organization to which he is affiliated.

He reiterated these sentiments in a post on X, a social media platform previously known as Twitter, accusing decades of Israeli impunity, backed by the U.S. and other Western governments, and years of Palestinian dehumanization by Western media, of contributing to the ongoing genocide in Palestine.

Addressing the divided UN Security Council on Tuesday, Filippo Grandi, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, pleaded for unity and support for a ceasefire, aiming to halt the ongoing “spiral of death” in the Middle East.

The director emphasized the imperative for the Security Council to set aside their differences, assert their authority, and demand an immediate humanitarian ceasefire to bring an end to the ongoing tragedy.
