Majid Al Suwaidi, the General Director of the Climate Conference ‘COP28,’ expressed disappointment over deviations from the goals and ambitions of the Paris Climate Agreement. He stated that the critical task now is to return to that path.
His comments were made on the sidelines of decisive talks that began this week in Bonn, Germany, as part of the preparations for ‘COP28,’ the largest international climate conference, which the United Arab Emirates will host this November.
Negotiators, envoys, and diplomats are meeting in Bonn for the first time since ‘COP27,’ held last November in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt. There, an agreement was made to establish a loss and damage fund for poorer countries.
While this agreement is groundbreaking, the fund’s establishment and other solutions proposed at the previous climate summit have not been fully implemented yet.
The climate change conference in Bonn will span ten days and provide an opportunity to critically assess progress towards climate goals via the United Nations’ global review. This evaluation of the world’s response to climate change aims to ensure countries are fulfilling their commitments to the Paris Agreement of 2015.
