President Joe Biden of the United States has reaffirmed his support for the democratic journey in Iraq. In a statement, he emphasized the importance of strengthening institutions to support the diverse Iraqi population.

This commitment comes as Iraq commemorates its 91st Independence Day, with President Biden extending his congratulations to the Iraqi government and people.

Background: The relationship between the United States and Iraq has been marked by significant political and security developments over the years. Iraq’s pursuit of democracy and stability has been a key concern for the international community, including the United States.

President Biden’s Message: During a meeting with Iraq’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Fuad Hussein, U.S. Ambassador to Iraq Alina Romanowski delivered a letter from President Biden to his Iraqi counterpart, Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid. In the letter, President Biden expressed his congratulations on the occasion of Iraq’s Independence Day.

In the message, President Biden stressed the importance of global security and the ongoing efforts to combat terrorism, particularly the defeat of ISIS (Daesh). He reaffirmed his commitment to working on shared priorities and strengthening the partnership between Baghdad and Washington.

The Future of Iraq-U.S. Relations: The meeting between Iraq’s Foreign Minister and the U.S. Ambassador also included discussions about recent meetings in New York between American and Iraqi delegations, led by Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi. These discussions highlight the mutual interests and cooperative efforts between the two nations.

President Biden’s expression of support for Iraq’s democratic path underscores the significance of Iraq’s progress and stability in the region. As Iraq continues its journey toward democracy and security, cooperation between Iraq and the United States remains a critical aspect of regional stability and peace.
