In a strategic move to solidify its presence on the African continent, Russia has successfully negotiated the establishment of a military base in Central Africa, realizing a long-held ambition since 2017. Initially aiming for a base in Port Sudan, the overthrow of President Omar al-Bashir’s regime in 2019 disrupted Moscow’s plans. However, undeterred, Russia pursued its vision, culminating in the acquisition of a military foothold in Central Africa by 2024.

Analysts view this development as a dual victory for Moscow: extending its geopolitical reach and safeguarding its burgeoning investments in regions experiencing a decline in French influence. This strategic positioning allows Russia to replace France as a dominant force in these areas.

Details of the Military Base:

• According to “Mond Afrique,” the Central African government has allocated land in Beringo, roughly 80 kilometers from the capital Bangui, for a Russian base capable of hosting around 10,000 troops.
• This central location provides Russian forces with a strategic vantage point to monitor activities across West, East, North, and South Africa, offering rapid deployment capabilities to various hotspots within the continent and the Arabian Peninsula.
• The base will enable the Russian military to quickly reach conflict zones in Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, given the supersonic speeds of modern fighter jets.
• President Faustin-Archange Touadéra of the Central African Republic, a staunch supporter of Russia, reportedly employs Wagner Group forces as his personal guards.
• Last month, a presidential advisor announced the country’s readiness to host a Russian military base, emphasizing the role of Russian forces in training local troops and expressing unwavering support for Russia’s continued presence.

Investment Protection:

Russian political analyst Negm Kabas highlights the base’s significance in protecting Russian investments and countering Western dominance. Russia’s support has been instrumental in liberating vast areas of Central Africa from armed groups, contrasting with Western inaction.

By fostering economic development and providing humanitarian aid, Russia has positioned itself as a trustworthy ally in Africa.

Strengthening Relations:

Charles Asiegbu, an African affairs expert, notes the strong ties between Moscow and Bangui, forged through the Wagner Group’s support in combating rebels. The base legitimizes Russia’s growing influence in Central Africa and beyond, marking a significant step in Russia’s re-engagement with the continent and offering new opportunities for military and economic cooperation.

In summary, Russia’s establishment of a military base in Central Africa represents a strategic expansion of its influence on the continent, providing a platform for protecting investments, strengthening bilateral relations, and countering Western dominance in the region.
