A stretch of highway measuring more than 100 meters collapsed on Saturday near Gothenburg in southwest Sweden, leading to overturned vehicles and causing minor injuries to three people, according to emergency services and the police.
An investigation has been opened to determine a possible link to an adjacent construction site.
Daniel Leklid, the Director of Emergency Services in Gothenburg, stated in a press release that the landslide “damaged about ten vehicles and an area that includes a forest, a commercial area with a gas station, and a fast-food restaurant.”
Emergency services indicated that the most severely affected area extends nearly 100 meters in length and 150 meters in width, but the overall landslide affected an area about 700 meters long and 200 meters wide.
A police spokesperson mentioned that three individuals were transported to the hospital with “minor injuries” following the collapse that occurred in Stenungsund, about 50 kilometers north of Gothenburg.
Images published by local media showed a large crater extending for over 100 meters, several damaged and overturned trucks, and a bus that had fallen into the crater.
Emergency services stated, “Many individuals needed assistance from firefighters and helicopters to exit their vehicles in the landslide area.”
A truck driver whose vehicle was parked in a parking lot in the area told P4 Vast radio, “I woke up when the truck started to move, and I didn’t understand what was happening.”
The collapse occurred shortly before 2:00 AM local time.
