The United Nations has issued a stark warning about the dire condition of the Wadi Jaza Dam and the Al-Qattara Dam, located near the city of Benghazi in Libya, raising concerns about a potential catastrophic dam collapse in the eastern regions of the country.
According to a report published by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, as broadcasted by the Libyan TV channel “Al-Wasat,” both dams are rapidly filling with water.
These dams, namely the Wadi Jaza Dam situated between Derna and Benghazi and the Al-Qattara Dam near Benghazi, are now at risk of collapsing, adding to the growing concerns of yet another destructive dam failure.
The report highlights that the unprecedented flooding accompanying Storm Daniel has left nearly 11,300 people dead, with an additional 10,100 people missing in the city of Derna alone.
It also notes that 170 people have lost their lives in other areas of eastern Libya.
