In a shocking revelation, Greek authorities announced today, September 14, 2023, that more than 200,000 animals have been reported dead in the wake of Storm Daniel that hit the country last week.

Lefteris Avgenakis, the Greek Minister of Rural Development and Foods, shared these alarming statistics, emphasizing the blow to Greece’s agricultural sector. The national daily “Ekathimerini” reported Avgenakis’ statement detailing the extent of the loss.

To break down the figures:
• Sheep and Goats: 61,786 casualties reported.
• Pigs: 19,355 lost.
• Cattle: 5,306 dead.
• Poultry: A staggering 123,810 birds perished.
•
Avgenakis highlighted the ongoing challenges the authorities are facing. Access to the animal farming units remains difficult in the aftermath of the storm. This, in turn, is causing problems in the collection and management of the deceased animals.

Greece’s agricultural sector is a significant pillar of its economy. The nation is renowned for its diverse livestock farming, producing various dairy products, meats, and poultry that not only cater to domestic needs but are also exported.

The loss of such a large number of animals to Storm Daniel poses a severe challenge to farmers and can potentially impact the country’s agricultural exports.

Natural disasters like Storm Daniel highlight the vulnerability of the agricultural sector to changing weather patterns and stress the need for resilient farming practices and effective disaster management systems.
