US Approves Sale of 25 “F-35 Jets” to South Korea

The US Department of State has potentially approved the foreign military sale of F-35 fighter jets to South Korea.

The Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), a part of the US Department of Defense (Pentagon), revealed that the US Department of State has given initial approval for a $5.06 billion arms deal with South Korea, encompassing fighter aircraft and associated equipment.

The deal includes a maximum of 25 F-35 fighter aircraft, along with engines, military equipment, materials, and technical support.

South Korea’s Defense Acquisition Program Administration decided in March to purchase up to 20 F-35A fighter jets to enhance its ability to strike North Korean nuclear and missile facilities in case of emergencies.

According to the US agency, these sales will contribute to improving the security situation for a key ally that supports political stability and economic development in the Indo-Pacific region.

This, in turn, aligns with US foreign policy and national security objectives.

The sales are expected to provide South Korea with reliable defense capabilities to deter regional threats and ensure interoperability with the US military, thereby enhancing South Korea’s ability to respond to current and future challenges.
