The United Nations Mission to Support the Transition in Sudan (UNITAMS) said the ongoing conflict in Sudan between the army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) caused unimaginable suffering to the Sudanese people.

UNITAMS urged political leaders to set aside their differences and work collaboratively to lead Sudan out of this “deep crisis.”

In its periodic report, spanning from May to August, released on Monday, the mission stressed that the conflict has led to a national catastrophe, with unacceptable losses. It emphasized the importance of heeding the Sudanese people’s call for a halt in fighting.

Furthermore, the mission cautioned that prolonging the conflict makes it increasingly challenging to stop.

The report raised concerns over the increasing ethnic mobilization and ethnically motivated attacks, which could potentially escalate to a full-blown civil war.

This devastating conflict in Sudan has caused unimaginable suffering and led to a humanitarian disaster nationwide. The call from the Sudanese people for peace now cannot be ignored.

The report highlighted that the unity and stability of Sudan and the broader region are at stake. It’s time for the leaders on both sides to lay down their weapons and spare the Sudanese people further pain and suffering.

UNITAMS called on international stakeholders to exert pressure on both parties, urging them to cease hostilities and initiate efforts for a peaceful resolution.

The mission warned that continued fighting in Sudan amplifies concerns over diminishing political civic space and undermines the likelihood of a civil transition.

The report issued by UNITAMS reiterated its call for political leaders to move beyond their disagreements and collaboratively work to navigate Sudan out of this described “deep crisis”.
