Amidst ongoing financial constraints, Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyadh Al-Maliki and UNRWA’s Commissioner-General, Philippe Lazzarini, converge to deliberate the operational and financial challenges the agency faces.

In a recent meeting, Palestinian Foreign Minister, Riyadh Al-Maliki, and the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) Commissioner-General, Philippe Lazzarini, explored the multifaceted challenges that impede the agency’s operations.

A key focal point was the anticipated budgetary constraints for 2023, given the current financial deficits.

Addressing the Paramount Role of UNRWA
The dialogue, which took place at the headquarters of the Arab League in Cairo on the sidelines of the Third Ministerial Meeting for Arab-Japanese Political Dialogue, saw Al-Maliki emphasizing the pivotal role UNRWA plays.

He highlighted the agency’s commitment to preserving the rights of Palestinian refugees until their eventual return to their homes.

Al-Maliki further stressed Palestine’s international priority in providing all means of support for UNRWA and its mission. He addressed the urgency to counteract any campaigns that maliciously attempt to tarnish or undermine this essential role, as reported by the Palestinian News Agency (WAFA).

Serious Repercussions of Budget Deficit
Lazzarini, on his part, voiced concerns that any shortfall in the standard budget would severely impact UNRWA’s services, affecting both the host countries and the refugee community. He signaled that this issue would be presented to donors, emphasizing the need for flexibility in their funding and robust support for the agency’s budget.

Seeking Unified Support Amidst Challenges
As the situation continues to unfold, it becomes imperative for international stakeholders to rally behind the indispensable services UNRWA offers, ensuring that the rights and welfare of Palestinian refugees are unconditionally upheld.
