Rania Al Mashat, the Egyptian Minister of International Cooperation, stated that COP28 will serve as a significant global platform to address the challenges posed by climate change and its adverse impacts on nations and populations.
The 28th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) is set to be hosted by the UAE from November 30 to 12 December 2023, at Expo City Dubai.
Speaking to the Emirates News Agency (WAM), Al Mashat emphasized that the decision for the UAE to host COP28 is a demonstration of the country’s commitment to supporting international climate action in the Arab region, the Middle East, and North Africa. This move is intended to draw international attention to the importance of climate action in this area.
Highlighting the vulnerabilities of the MENA region to climate change risks, Al Mashat pointed out that reports from international sources indicate that this region is particularly susceptible, with 60% of its population residing in regions facing severe water stress.
Moreover, climate change could result in the displacement of around 20 million people in the region.
Al Mashat also mentioned that COP28 will feature presentations showcasing the key outcomes and collaborative efforts achieved over the past year through initiatives like the National Platform for Green Projects (Novi) and the Sharm El Sheikh Guidebook for Just Financing.
She further elaborated that she participated in a series of preparatory events organized by the UAE in the lead-up to COP28, aimed at developing a strategic plan for advancing climate action in the region.
The Egyptian minister underscored the achievements of COP27, which included the establishment of the COP27 Loss and Damage Fund.
She anticipates that COP28 will build upon these accomplishments and contribute to global endeavors in assisting developing nations and emerging economies as they transition towards more sustainable and environmentally conscious practices.
