On Saturday, the governor of Belgorod reported that five people were killed in a Ukrainian shelling of the Russian border city of Shebekino.
This region has frequently been targeted by Ukrainian attacks.
Vyacheslav Gladkov, the governor of Belgorod, stated that four bodies were retrieved from the rubble of a partially collapsed house in Shebekino.
Additionally, a woman succumbed to her injuries in the hospital. Six civilians were injured in the late-night shelling.
Emergency services released images showing a crane and rescue workers sifting through the debris of a five-story building that was destroyed during the night.
Shebekino, with a population of 40,000, is located near the Ukrainian border, less than 100 kilometers from Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city.
This area has been under attack by Russian forces since May 10.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has stated that the military operation in Kharkiv aims to create a buffer zone to protect Russian border villages.
In contrast, Ukraine claims its attacks on Russian territory in this region are acts of self-defense.
Since the onset of Russia’s military campaign in Ukraine in 2022, Belgorod has witnessed a series of attacks that Kyiv describes as retaliatory measures against Moscow’s extensive offensive.
