Elements of the terrorist organization ISIS killed 30 fishermen in a retaliatory attack against the Nigerian army in the northeast of the country.
Radio “Europe 1” reported on Wednesday that ISIS militants launched an assault on islands in Borno State on the past Sunday and Monday, where they captured the fishermen and then opened fire on them.
The radio reported that the Nigerian army has not yet issued a statement regarding the attack, but according to informed sources, this attack was in retaliation for the airstrikes carried out by the army against ISIS camps in Nigeria.
It is worth noting that both Boko Haram and ISIS carry out attacks in West Africa against farmers, loggers, herders, and even fishermen, whom they accuse of providing information to the army about terrorist organizations.
ISIS has established a significant presence in Nigeria through its regional branch, ISIS-West Africa Province (ISIS-WA). This group originated in 2015 when ISIS accepted a pledge of allegiance from the Nigeria-based terrorist group Boko Haram. Since then, ISIS-WA has controlled large areas in northeastern Nigeria and has been responsible for numerous attacks, including ambushes, military assaults, kidnappings, and targeted killings. The group has also extended its operations into central and southwestern Nigeria, impacting states like Kogi, Taraba, and Kaduna
The Nigerian Armed Forces have acknowledged the threat posed by ISIS and have taken measures to counter their activities. The military has reported some success in reducing the number of incidents in the northeastern region, but challenges remain as ISIS-WA continues to exploit economic and social vulnerabilities to recruit members and sustain its operations
