At least 23 soldiers were killed in an attack carried out by ISIS on a military bus in eastern Syria on Thursday evening, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights on Friday.
This marks a new escalation by the extremist organization.
The observatory reported that members of the organization targeted a military bus in the desert of Al-Mayadin in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor.
The incident resulted in the deaths of 23 soldiers and the injury of more than 10 others with varying degrees of wounds.
It is indicated that the death toll is likely to rise due to the presence of severe injuries.
It should be noted that the strength of ISIS has diminished in recent times, after once ruling over a third of Iraq and Syria.
The terrorist organization lost control over areas it once held in both countries, in counter operations involving a coalition led by the United States.
